143 Liverpool Street Familia | Museum of Sydney | Public Sydney Exhibition

I was commissioned by the Museum of Sydney to shoot the photographic component of their latest exhibition Public Sydney : Stop Look Live, sponsored by the Sydney Morning Herald. The brief was for me to go out into the city and find people using public spaces and in particular groups of people using the spaces in ways that they were not originally intended. One such group is The 143 Liverpool Street Familia, a Hip-Hop dance crew, that practice outside the Downing Centre Court from 9pm Monday to Thursday nights. To the sound of a portable music player, they each take a turn dancing in the circle. The circle is the logo of the building’s original occupant, The Mark Foy’s Ltd department store. Their crew comprises of bboys, lockers, house dancers, waackers, rock dancers and freestyle Hip-Hop dancers. They are amazing dancers and incredible athletes. Stay up late on a school night and go check them out.

I will post more images from the project soon. Stay tuned for Yo-Yo’s, a mobile knife sharpener, skate boarders, Matt the eel guy, the Martin Place bike couriers, the Hyde Park cocktail flair bartender and some random street photography.
