Hyde Park YoYo Gang | Museum of Sydney | Public Sydney Exhibition

Walk through Hyde Park, Sydney on a Sunday afternoon and you will see a group of YoYo enthusiasts. I haven’t seen a YoYo since my childhood in Ireland. Who knew they were back in fashion? The gangs are serious competitive sports men,  each carrying a case of performance yoyo’s and bearings and tools.

I photographed the YoYo gang for the Museum of Sydney’s latest exhibition Public Sydney : Stop Look Live, 30 March – 8 September. The brief was for me to go out into the city and find people using public spaces and in particular groups of people using the spaces in ways that they were not originally intended. Inspired by the new book Public Sydney: Drawing the City, by Philip Thalis and Peter John Cantrill, this exhibition features photographs, drawings, objects and video stories about five important Sydney sites: Bennelong Point, the Museum of Sydney, Hyde Park, Town Hall and Central Station.
